Gattaca
Gattaca tells a story that takes place in the future where a man named Vincent was a natural birth, living in a world which was genetically designed. Vincent had wanted to travel to space since he was a child, but he was born with a congenital heart condition that made it impossible for him to achieve his dream. He even worked in the Gattaca Corporation as a toilet cleaner. His hope was that he would get into Gattaca someday. One day, he hired someone to turn his identity into Eugene’s. Eugene was an Olympic swimmer who had perfect genes. Eugene had everything Vincent would need to get anywhere. Eugene was paralyzed in a car accident. Therefore, Vincent made a deal with Eugene that Vincent would give Eugene compensation when Vincent borrowed Eugene’s identity. With professional advice, everything worked to plan. However, a week before Vincent’s flight, Gattaca’s mission director was killed and Vincent lost an eyelash at the scene then the police found it when they were looking for the murder’s ID. Despite this, the police was unable to find Vincent, so the police started to conduct searches. Vincent tried to avoid the police and worked hard to pass the test. Eventually, we learn the murderer is Vincent’s director who wanted to stop the mission director from cancelling the flight. In the end, Vincent achieved his dream of space travel.
After seeing this film for a second time I like it even better than the first time. The first time, I learned how Vincent, who is inherently challenged, works hard to make his dream come true. This time I watched with my classmates and the professor gave us some questions. Now I realize how the genetic design leads to a new form of discrimination. In addition, I changed my mind about genetic design. Before I thought if I had the opportunity to select special traits for my children I would do that. I want my children to be perfect and I think every parent wants that. Right now if I decide to have a child one day, I want my child to born in a natural way. I do not want the future to have discrimination against gene like the Gattaca. I hope my child will be like Vincent and try his/her best to get the dream done. As long as you work hard, your dream will to be close to you.
