What influences your life adjustment? In the article,“How Your Birth Order Influences Your Life
Adjustment”, Forer believes that your birth order influences your life adjustment. For instance, usually the oldest child is more capable and responsible than the younger siblings. The middle child is more capable than his younger siblings. However, the youngest child may be less able to do many things. In contrast, the only child is more independent. I agree with Forer’s opinion. Nevertheless, I also think gender can influence your life adjustment.
Why does birth order influences people’s life adjustment? I think the most important influence is parents. As Forer writes, “Parent usually expect their oldest to be more capable and more responsible than the younger children.” I think usually how people think about you, exactly shapes you how to think about yourself. The youngest child is less able to do many things than other people. Parents always believe that everyone should take care of the youngest child. Because of this, the youngest child always depends on other people to take care of him. Thus, the birth order influences people’s life adjustment.
On the anther hand, gender can also influence people’s life adjustment. Usually, people think boys should be more independent. Boys should take care of girls. Boys are more competent than girls. I have a younger brother. Since he was a child, my parents have always taught him that he should be more capable and responsible. My brother is more competent than me. In my family, he always takes care of me. He can do everything, such as carrying heavy stuff, fixing some place and cooking dinner. He always thinks he is a boy so he should take care of me. It influences him to develop certain attitudes toward him and toward me. As a result, I think gender is one factor that influences people’s life adjustment.
Forer states that “Both in his mind and in the minds of other people, an important part of his identity is his family position.” I want to say both in his mind and in the minds of other people, gender also an important part of his identity. In sum, developing specific patterns of behavior is influenced by birth order and gender.
